Best Buy Review: Are Its Insignia House Brands Worth Buying?

Best Buy’s own Insignia TVs and freezers are some of the best-rated products on its site, but a short standard return window and a growing marketplace mean the fine print matters more than the price tag.

The verdict in 60 seconds

  • Insignia’s 55-inch F50 Fire TV and 13.8-cubic-foot convertible freezer each carry thousands of reviews averaging 4.6 or better, which is rare for a store brand.
  • The standard return window is 15 days from receipt; paying members get 60 days, but that longer window excludes Marketplace products sold by outside sellers.
  • Many listings show a “comparable value” price well above the selling price, so judge the deal on the actual number, not the size of the claimed saving.

Scoring Best Buy

67/100

Strong, cheap house-brand products undercut by a short default return window, a confusing marketplace and service complaints around delivery and installs.

Worth your money

Pick 01

Insignia 55" Class F50 Series 4K Fire TV $199.99

A 4K Fire TV at a price that undercuts most name brands, with nearly 4,000 reviews.

This 55-inch LED set runs Amazon’s Fire TV software, supports HDR10 and averages 4.6 stars, with about 93 percent of reviewers recommending it. Best Buy’s own review summary flags the button layout and modest volume. Even happy owners note shallow blacks in a dark room, a sluggish Fire TV interface and no high refresh rate for fast games. With 140 one-star ratings in the mix, read the newest critical reviews before buying.

Best for
Bedrooms, dorms and budget living rooms
Weak spot
Weak blacks and a slow interface

Pick 02

Insignia 13.8 Cu. Ft. Convertible Upright Freezer $479.99

A garage-ready upright that switches between freezer and fridge from a digital panel.

Best Buy rates it for garages from 0 to 110 degrees in freezer mode, with four glass shelves, a door alarm and a fast-freeze setting. More than 4,400 reviewers give it 4.7 on average, and owners like that an upright saves digging through a chest. The summary of complaints centers on the door design and shelf durability. It is a large appliance, so returns go through a phone call rather than a store counter.

Best for
Garages and households that buy meat in bulk
Weak spot
Door design and shelf durability draw complaints

Pick 03

Insignia 7 Cu. Ft. Garage Ready Chest Freezer $169.99

A compact, convertible chest freezer with an unusually clean review record.

At this size it fits beside a washer or in an apartment kitchen, and it converts to a fridge with a front dial. Only a handful of its 361 reviews are below four stars. Those that are mention dents on delivery and a lid that seals so tightly it can be hard to open. One owner slips a knife under the gasket to break the suction. It was marked clearance when we checked, so stock may not last.

Best for
Small homes and garage overflow
Weak spot
Lid suction and occasional delivery dents

Pick 04

Insignia 2.1 Channel Soundbar with Wireless Subwoofer $99.99

An affordable soundbar and wireless sub that fixes thin TV speakers.

This pairs a bar with a wireless subwoofer, Bluetooth, DTS Virtual:X processing and a dialogue-enhancement mode. It was on sale at $79.99 when we checked, and 392 reviews average 4.5, with sound quality the most praised feature. Know what you are buying: it is a two-channel bar with virtual surround processing, not a true surround system, and a minority of buyers rated it one or two stars.

Best for
Clearer dialogue on a budget TV
Weak spot
Virtual surround only, no rear speakers

Pick 05

My Best Buy Plus Membership $29.99 per year

The cheapest way to turn a 15-day return window into 60 days.

Plus adds free two-day shipping, member pricing and a 60-day return window on most items, plus 0.5 points per dollar on qualifying purchases. For a big TV or appliance purchase, the longer window alone is worth the fee. It auto-renews, its review score of 4.2 from about 43,000 ratings is lower than the products it covers, and the 60-day window does not apply to Marketplace items from outside sellers.

Best for
Anyone buying a TV or appliance this year
Weak spot
Auto-renews; excludes Marketplace returns

Insignia 40" Class F40 Full HD Fire TV

It is cheap at $119.99, but it is 1080p with no HDR, and it has the weakest review profile of the Insignia sets we read: 184 one-star ratings out of about 2,200. One detailed three-star review describes nightly freezes and random restarts, and calls that the most common complaint. With a 15-day return window, we would spend more for the F50.

My Best Buy Total Membership

At $199.99 a year, Total adds protection plans, AppleCare+ on eligible Apple purchases, 24/7 tech support and repair discounts on top of Plus. That math works for a household buying several phones or laptops a year. For most shoppers buying one TV, Plus at $29.99 delivers the longer return window and free shipping for far less.

Buying from Best Buy

Each line below was read on Best Buy's own site in October 2026. Policies move; if one has, tell us.

Fifteen days from receipt for most products, or 60 days for My Best Buy Plus and Total members. Activatable phones and tablets get 14 days. Marketplace products do not get the longer member window.

Restocking fees
Opened phones carry a $45 fee, and drones, cameras, projectors and several other categories carry 15% of the price, waived in some states.
Marketplace
Some listings are sold and shipped by outside sellers. Their returns follow seller arrangements, and truck-delivered items must be arranged directly with the seller.
Membership
My Best Buy is free. Plus costs $29.99 a year for free two-day shipping and 60-day returns; Total costs $199.99 and adds protection plans and 24/7 tech support.

Questions readers ask

What is Best Buy’s return window?

Fifteen days from the day you receive the product for standard customers, and 60 days for My Best Buy Plus and Total members. Activatable devices such as cell phones get 14 days for everyone, though Verizon devices get 30. The member extension excludes Marketplace products from outside sellers.

Is Insignia made by Best Buy?

Insignia is one of Best Buy’s own brands, which is why its TVs, freezers and soundbars are priced below most name brands. On the pages we read, the big sellers carry ratings between 4.4 and 4.8 from hundreds or thousands of buyers. Quality varies by model, so check the one-star count, not just the average.

What does “comparable value” mean on Best Buy listings?

It is a reference price shown beside the selling price, such as $349.99 next to a $199.99 TV and $849.99 next to a $479.99 freezer. It is not necessarily a price anyone recently paid at Best Buy. Compare the selling price against other stores instead of relying on the claimed saving.

Does Best Buy charge restocking fees?

On some items. Opened activatable phones carry a $45 fee, and drones, cameras, camera lenses, projectors, some scooters and special-order products carry 15% of the price. There is no fee on unopened products, or in several states including Colorado, Ohio and Hawaii.

The bottom line

Best Buy’s Insignia products are better than the store-brand label suggests, and the chest freezer and 55-inch F50 are easy recommendations at their current prices. The risk is the fine print: a 15-day standard return window, marketplace sellers mixed into search results and a service record Trustpilot reviewers hammer. Buy Insignia, check who is selling the item, and pay for Plus before any big purchase.
