Costco Review: Is Kirkland Signature Still the Reason to Join?

Costco’s house label is the real argument for a membership, but shoppers say some Kirkland staples have quietly changed, and buying online usually costs more than buying in the warehouse.

The short version

  • Kirkland Signature basics such as the $16.99 cotton jean and $39.99 two-dozen golf balls remain some of the cheapest decent versions of everyday things in the country.
  • The satisfaction guarantee is the most generous return promise in big-box retail, with a 90-day limit only on televisions, computers, phones and similar electronics.
  • Online prices often sit above warehouse prices: the 12-roll paper towels were $23.99 for 2-Day Delivery against $20.99 on the warehouse shelf.
  • Recent low-star reviews on several Kirkland lines describe the same thing: a changed supplier, thinner material, or a lower wool content than the version people loved.
  • You need a paid membership, starting at $65 a year for Gold Star, and Trustpilot reviewers are far grumpier about service than the brand’s reputation suggests.

The picks

Pick 01

Kirkland Signature Men’s Cotton Jean $16.99

A heavyweight all-cotton work jean for the price of a fast-food lunch.

The product page lists 100 percent cotton at roughly 14.5 ounces, made in Cambodia, in even waists from 30 to 46 and four inseams. Close to 18,000 members have rated it, and the average still sits at 4.4 out of 5. The complaints are specific: long-time buyers say the relaunched jean is stiffer, coarser and runs smaller than the old one. If you want give, the Stretch Jean beside it costs a little more and adds elastane.

Best for
Work, yard days and anyone who wears jeans out
Weak spot
Runs small and stiff compared with older versions
See it at Costco
Pick 02

Kirkland Signature V3.0 Golf Ball, 2-dozen $39.99

A three-piece urethane ball at a price premium brands cannot touch.

Costco describes a urethane cover, a soft core and a 338-dimple pattern, sold as two boxes of 12. With nearly 800 reviews averaging 4.8, it is one of the best-rated things on the site. The most-helpful critical review is worth reading: a regular buyer noticed new side markings and found the ball spins more off the driver, which cost him fairways. Slicers should take note. Everyone else gets tour-style construction for well under the price of a premium dozen.

Best for
Mid and low handicappers who want a urethane cover
Weak spot
Higher driver spin can magnify a slice

Pick 03

Kirkland Signature Paper Towels, 12 Rolls $23.99

The default bulk paper towel, with more than 41,000 member ratings behind it.

Each roll carries 160 Create-a-Size sheets, and the 12-roll pack is individually wrapped. Ratings average 4.8, but the recent one-star reviews are pointed: buyers report thinner sheets, poor perforation and lint or paper dust, and some date the change to late 2025. Buy it in the warehouse if you can. We saw $23.99 for 2-Day Delivery and $20.99 on the warehouse shelf, and orders under $75 add a $3 delivery fee.

Best for
Big households already making a warehouse run
Weak spot
Reports of thinner sheets and lint since late 2025

Pick 04

Kirkland Signature Men’s Merino Wool Blend Sock, 4-pair $17.49

Made-in-USA cushioned wool socks for roughly the price of one premium pair.

The current blend is 57 percent merino with recycled nylon, nylon and elastane, sold as two black and two natural pairs that fit shoe sizes 7 to 13. Average ratings sit at 4.6 across about 1,760 reviews. The unhappy reviews are from loyalists: several say the sock used to carry more wool and felt plusher underfoot, and big-footed buyers complain about a tight ankle cuff. As a work or hiking sock at this price, it still beats most of the drugstore alternatives.

Best for
Work boots, hiking and cold commutes
Weak spot
Tight cuff for large feet; wool content was cut
See it at Costco
Pick 05

Kirkland Signature Plush Blanket $26.99

A heavy queen or king plush blanket at a throw-blanket price.

This online-only blanket is 100 percent polyester at 520 GSM, with an embossed two-inch binding at the top, in queen or king and four colors. The 4.7 average across about 640 reviews is strong. The low-star reviews describe shedding and pilling after the first wash and a binding that came loose within months, and one long-time buyer says it is lighter than an older Kirkland blanket. Wash it cold and gentle as the label asks.

Best for
Cold bedrooms and guest beds
Weak spot
Some shedding and loose binding after washing

What we'd pass on

Skip

Kirkland Signature Ultra Shine Dish Soap, Fresh

It cleans well, and at $9.99 online ($7.99 in the warehouse) for 90 ounces the math is fine. The problem is the scent. The critical reviews keep returning to a perfume strong enough to linger on baby bottles and griddles after rinsing, and several ask Costco to bring back a fragrance-free version. If you are sensitive to scent, buy a free-and-clear brand instead.

Skip

Kirkland Signature by Stearns & Foster Lakeridge Mattress

It looks like a deal, with delivery, setup and haul-away included and a 10-year warranty listed. But the low-star reviews describe sagging within months to a few years, and one buyer described being passed between the warehouse, Costco’s concierge line and the manufacturer when he tried to claim. At this price, buy from a mattress brand with a clear trial and a single warranty contact.

The fine print at Costco

Each line below was read on Costco's own site in October 2026. Policies move; if one has, tell us.

Membership
Required to shop. Gold Star costs $65 a year and Executive $130 a year, plus tax. Executive adds an annual 2% reward on qualifying purchases, capped at $1,250.
Shipping
Standard UPS Ground shipping is included in the online price of most items. 2-Day Delivery groceries add a $3 fee on orders under $75. Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico pay extra.
Returns window
No general deadline under the satisfaction guarantee. Televisions, computers, tablets, phones, cameras, drones, smart wearables and major appliances must come back within 90 days of receipt. Alcohol, gift cards and precious metals are non-refundable.
Return shipping
Free. Start a return in Orders & Returns for a prepaid label or pickup, or take an online order to any warehouse for an immediate refund that includes the original shipping fees.
Warranty
Costco Technical & Warranty Services covers support on many electronics. Large freight items are collected by the same carrier type that delivered them, which can take five to seven business days to arrange.
Support
A large self-service help center on the customer service site, plus the membership counter in any warehouse. Kirkland Signature product questions have their own inquiry form.

Who it's for, who should pass

Buy if you are

  • a household that goes through paper goods, basics and socks quickly
  • someone who values a return promise with almost no deadline
  • a golfer or worker who wants cheap, decent gear in bulk
  • already near a warehouse and willing to shop in person

Pass if you are

  • a single-person household with no room to store bulk packs
  • shopping only online, where many items cost more than in store
  • loyal to an old Kirkland version that may have been changed
  • unwilling to pay a yearly fee before seeing a single price

Still wondering?

Are Costco.com prices the same as in the warehouse?

Often not. On the pages we read, the 12-roll Kirkland paper towels were $23.99 for 2-Day Delivery and $20.99 at the warehouse, and the 90-ounce dish soap was $9.99 against $7.99. Online prices for shipped goods usually fold the delivery cost into the price. Trustpilot reviewers complain about the same gap. Price-check in the app before you order.

Is there a time limit on Costco returns?

For most merchandise, no. Costco’s satisfaction guarantee refunds the purchase price at any time, with exceptions: a 90-day window on televisions, computers, tablets, phones, cameras, drones, smart wearables and major appliances, and no refunds on alcohol where prohibited, gift cards, tickets or precious metals. Custom and special-order items are excluded too.

Can I return a Costco.com order to a warehouse?

Yes. Costco says any online order can be returned to any of its warehouses, and doing so gets an immediate refund that includes shipping and handling. You can also start a return online for a prepaid label or pickup. Large freight items are collected by the carrier, which contacts you within five to seven business days.

Has Kirkland Signature quality changed?

On some items, buyers say so. Recent critical reviews on the paper towels, merino socks, plush blanket and men’s jeans describe thinner material, a lower wool content or a different manufacturer. The socks’ own page now lists 57 percent merino. Ratings remain high overall, so read the newest reviews before stocking up.

Is the Executive membership worth it?

Only if you spend heavily. The Executive tier costs $130 a year against $65 for Gold Star, and pays a 2% annual reward on qualifying purchases up to $1,250. Costco’s own example uses $4,970 in purchases. Below roughly $3,250 a year in qualifying spend, the reward does not cover the extra $65.

Where we land

Costco remains one of the few retailers where the house brand is the reason to shop, and the return promise is unmatched. Buy Kirkland basics in the warehouse rather than online, read the newest reviews before assuming a favorite has not changed, and skip the mattress and the heavily scented dish soap. If your household can use bulk and lives near a club, the membership pays for itself quickly.
