Factor Review: Are Ready-Made Meals Worth the Subscription?
Factor delivers fully cooked, never-frozen meals that heat in about two minutes, and its HelloFresh-style subscription terms deserve as much attention as the menu.

The short version
- The food is the strength: protein-forward plates such as Smoky Gouda Chicken list 42 grams of protein, and reviewers mostly praise taste and freshness.
- Changes and cancellations lock at 11:59 p.m. Central five days before delivery, and your very first box can only be canceled by contacting customer care.
- Complaints must be raised within five days; Factor chooses between a credit and a refund, and compensation credits can expire or be withdrawn.
- Five Factor meals now sit in Target’s refrigerated deli with no subscription, the cheapest way to see whether you like them.
- Delivery covers the contiguous US only, and the meals are not certified gluten-free, so people with celiac disease should look elsewhere.
The Beacon Score
Good-tasting, truly convenient prepared meals, held back by premium pricing, a credit-first complaints policy and recurring leak and late-delivery reports.

Worth your money

Smoky Gouda Chicken Price varies by plan
The most protein-dense of the five meals Factor sells at Target, and a fair test of the brand.
Served with potatoes and Parmesan green beans, it lists 42 grams of protein and 520 calories on Factor’s retail page. That ratio is what Factor does best: a filling, protein-forward plate that microwaves in its own tray. Because it is also sold at Target without a subscription, you can try it before signing up. Recent Trustpilot reviewers who mention sodium are worth hearing out; check the nutrition panel if you watch salt.
- Best for
- High-protein lunches and post-workout dinners
- Weak spot
- Check the sodium if you watch salt

Roasted Garlic Chicken Price varies by plan
A classic chicken-and-mash plate with a lean calorie count for the protein.
This one comes with gravy, Yukon mash and green beans, and Factor lists it at 40 grams of protein and 440 calories, the leanest of the five Target meals. It is comfort food built to dietitian targets, which is the whole Factor pitch. The trade-off at that calorie count is portion size: a recurring complaint in recent reviews is that some meals feel small, so bigger eaters may want a side or add-on.
- Best for
- Calorie-conscious eaters who still want comfort food
- Weak spot
- May feel small for big appetites

Shredded Chicken Taco Bowl Price varies by plan
A heartier bowl with corn salsa and cilantro crema for people who find other plates light.
At 550 calories and 36 grams of protein, the taco bowl is the fuller option among the meals Factor sells at Target. It leans on familiar Tex-Mex flavors rather than anything adventurous. It is a sensible default for a desk lunch. The usual Factor caveat applies: meals arrive chilled in a box with ice packs, and a few recent reviewers describe trays that cracked and leaked in transit.
- Best for
- Desk lunches that need to keep you going
- Weak spot
- Trays occasionally crack in transit

Thai-Style Green Chicken Curry Price varies by plan
A welcome break from chicken-and-potatoes, with coconut-lime rice and peppers.
Factor lists this curry at 31 grams of protein and 470 calories, with green beans, coconut-lime rice and peppers. It is the most flavor-forward of the retail lineup and a useful antidote to the sameness some long-time subscribers complain about. Protein is noticeably lower than the Gouda or garlic chicken plates, so it suits a lighter lunch more than a post-workout meal. Microwave times vary, so follow the sleeve instructions.
- Best for
- Subscribers bored of standard chicken plates
- Weak spot
- Less protein than the other picks

Breakfast Bundle Price varies by plan
The Breakfast Tostada Bake and Blueberry Pancakes, bundled as an add-on to a weekly box.
Factor’s add-ons page lists bundles for breakfast, shakes, smoothies and extra proteins, and the breakfast pairing is the most practical: it covers mornings without another delivery. Factor is currently advertising free breakfast for a year to new subscribers, so check whether your plan already includes it before paying. The add-ons page also carries a “valid for new subscribers only” line without saying exactly what it covers, which leaves the long-run cost unclear.
- Best for
- Subscribers who want breakfast covered too
- Weak spot
- Long-run pricing unclear from the page
Not these
Butternut Squash & Sage Chicken Macaroni
It is a seasonal, limited-time meal, and at 700 calories with an apple cranberry crumble included, it is the heaviest option on Factor’s retail page by a wide margin. That runs against the reason most people buy Factor, which is to hit protein and calorie targets without thinking. Treat it as an occasional indulgence rather than a weekly staple.

Reader questions
Can I cancel my first Factor box?
Not online. The plans page says that to cancel your first box you need to contact customer care. After that, you can cancel through account settings, as long as you beat the cutoff of 11:59 p.m. Central five days before delivery. Miss it and that week’s box is charged and delivered.
Are Factor meals frozen?
No. Factor sells its meals as fresh and never frozen. They arrive chilled with ice packs and insulation, each labeled with a best-before date, and you reheat them in the microwave in the tray. Factor says the black trays are BPA-free and designed to be heated, and to reheat until the meal reaches 165°F.
Can I buy Factor meals without a subscription?
Yes, in a limited way. Five Factor meals are sold in the refrigerated deli section at Target: Smoky Gouda Chicken, Roasted Garlic Chicken, Shredded Chicken Taco Bowl, Thai-Style Green Chicken Curry and a seasonal macaroni. Factor says they are the same meals subscribers receive.
How many meals does Factor offer each week?
It depends which Factor page you read. The FAQ page cites 35 weekly pre-made meals and 60+ add-ons, while How It Works cites 100+ weekly menu items and 70+ add-ons. The difference is mostly what counts as a menu item, since breakfasts, shakes and snacks are included in the larger figure.
Our call
Factor solves the problem meal kits do not: there is nothing to cook. The meals are protein-forward, clearly labeled and widely liked, and the Target deli option makes it easy to test the food first. The catch is the subscription around it, with a five-day cutoff, a first box you cannot cancel online, and complaints resolved mostly in credits that can vanish. Try a few meals from Target, then subscribe only if you will use it weekly.
