L.L.Bean Review: Is the One-Year Guarantee Still Enough in 2026?

The Maine outfitter still sews its boots and totes at home, but the lifetime returns are gone and Trustpilot is unhappy, so we checked which classics hold up and where the policy bites.

The short version

  • The Boat and Tote and Bean Boots are still made in Maine, and both carry thousands of mostly glowing on-site ratings.
  • Returns are accepted for a year from purchase, which beats most clothing brands, but the old no-time-limit promise ended in February 2018.
  • Mail returns cost $6.50 per package unless you pay with the L.L.Bean Mastercard; store returns are free but refund as store credit or a mailed check.
  • Free standard shipping starts at $75, or $50 for members of the free L.L.Bean Rewards program; otherwise it is $8.
  • Trustpilot sits at 2.1 out of 5, with long-time customers saying quality and service have slipped.

What we'd buy from L.L.Bean

Pick 01

Boat and Tote, Open-Top from $32.95

The most-reviewed item on the site, still sewn by hand in Brunswick, Maine.

Four sizes, from a small eight-liter bag to a fifty-six-liter extra-large, in 24-ounce American cotton canvas with a double-layer base and nylon-stitched seams. L.L.Bean says the handles are tested to 500 pounds. More than eleven thousand ratings average 4.8 out of 5. The weak points are minor: it only spot cleans, there is no closure on this version, and recent complaints were about a lost shipment and the volume of follow-up emails rather than the bag. Pick the long handles if you carry it on a shoulder.

Best for
Beach, groceries, boat days and firewood
Weak spot
Open top, and canvas only spot cleans

Pick 02

Men's Bean Boots, 8" $150

The original rubber-bottom, leather-top boot, still made in Maine.

The uninsulated eight-inch Bean Boot is waterproof up to the stitching on the rubber shell, with a steel shank and the chain-tread sole that L.L.Bean says now uses a longer-lasting rubber. It averages 4.5 out of 5 across about four hundred ratings. The fit is odd: the brand tells you to order a full size down, and recent one- and two-star reviews include a pair too tight to get on and a fourth-time buyer who says the workmanship has slipped. Bean Boots are also the subject of one Trustpilot complaint about stitching failing after three years.

Best for
Rain, mud and slush around town
Weak spot
Order a full size down; no insulation

Pick 03

Men's Scotch Plaid Flannel Shirt, Traditional Fit $59.95

Nearly twenty-four thousand ratings and an average of 4.7 out of 5.

This is Portuguese flannel in 100 percent cotton, woven only for L.L.Bean, with yarn-dyed tartans matched to the Scottish registry and a button-down collar. It machine washes and dries. The Traditional Fit is relaxed through the chest and waist, and that is where recent low reviews land: several buyers called a large enormous and the sleeves too long, and one said the current cut is a downgrade. One owner's yellow tartan faded after one wash. If you prefer a trimmer shape, look at the Slightly Fitted version instead.

Best for
Men who want a warm, classic shirt that lasts
Weak spot
Runs big; some tartans fade

Pick 04

Women's Wicked Good Moccasins, Plaid $99.95

Shearling lining and a rubber outsole that can handle a trip to the mailbox.

The flannel-upper version of the famous slipper has genuine shearling inside, a shearling-covered foam insole and a grooved rubber sole. Across more than thirteen hundred ratings it averages 4.6 out of 5. The page says half sizes should order up, and one long-time owner gave one star after two failed attempts to get the fit right for a half-size wearer. Another found the shearling on the tongue shrank after washing as directed. Treat the wash instructions with care.

Best for
Cold floors and quick trips outdoors
Weak spot
Half sizes are a gamble; shearling can shrink

Pick 05

Men's Mountain Classic Anorak, Multi-Color $69.95

A packable 1992 throwback windbreaker at a sensible price.

The anorak is wind- and water-resistant Supplex nylon with a zippered kangaroo pocket that doubles as its stuff sack, elastic cuffs and a hem drawcord. It is for drizzle and wind, not a storm. Owners rate it 4.7 out of 5 across about fourteen hundred ratings. The three-star reviews are worth reading: one expects the seams to unravel, one calls the material thin, and a few say it runs large. The slightly fitted cut is designed to go over a light layer only.

Best for
Breezy hikes and travel
Weak spot
Not waterproof; seams draw some complaints

Men's Bean Boots, 8" Shearling-Lined Insulated

At $290 this is almost double the plain eight-inch boot, and the eight-inch Insulated version sits at $180. Shearling feels wonderful, but it does not change the rubber bottom, the unusual sizing, or the slow, stiff break-in. Most people who need warmth will do fine with the insulated model and a good wool sock, and keep the difference.

Questions readers ask

Does L.L.Bean still have a lifetime return policy?

No. Since February 9, 2018, returns are accepted within one year of purchase. After a year, L.L.Bean will still consider items that are defective in materials or craftsmanship, and products bought before that 2018 date are not subject to the one-year limit. Proof of purchase is required either way.

What size Bean Boots should I order?

L.L.Bean tells you to order a full size down from your regular shoe size, so a size 9 becomes an 8. Recent reviews show people still get it wrong in both directions, so if a store is nearby, try them on, and remember that exchanges by mail cost $6.50 per package.

Can L.L.Bean repair my old Bean Boots?

Repairs are offered for select Bean Boots as a separate service beyond the return policy, alongside service plans for its fly rods and waders. One recent reviewer said repairs came back with an unpleasant smell, so ask what is involved before you send a pair in.

Is the L.L.Bean Mastercard worth it for free returns?

Only if you already want the card. It brings free shipping with no minimum, free return shipping and a higher Bean Bucks earn rate, and new cardholders are offered a discount on approval. The free Rewards program covers free shipping from $50 without a credit application. This is not financial advice; check the card terms first.

Our call

L.L.Bean still sells a handful of things that are hard to beat: the Boat and Tote, the Bean Boot and the Scotch Plaid flannel have years of owner praise behind them. A one-year return window is still generous by clothing standards. But the lifetime promise is gone, mail returns cost money, and long-time customers on Trustpilot say quality has slipped. Join the free Rewards program, stick to the made-in-Maine icons, and check sizing twice.
