Madewell Review: Are the $148 Jeans Still Worth It?
Madewell built its name on denim and still sells most of its jeans at one flat price, so we read the current fits, the fine print on returns and hundreds of owner reviews.

The short version
- The jeans are the reason to shop here: almost every core fit sits at $148, and the Perfect Vintage and 1991 cuts draw the steadiest praise.
- Shipping is free only if you join the free Insider program and sign in; guests pay $7 for standard delivery.
- Mail returns cost $7.50, deducted from your refund, unless you have reached the top Icon tier; store returns are free and instant.
- Trustpilot sits at a poor 2.1 out of 5, with wrong-item shipments and partly processed refunds as the recurring complaints.
- Some listings ship from outside Marketplace vendors, which return separately and cannot go back to a Madewell store.
How Madewell scored
Good denim at a fixed premium price, dragged down by paid mail returns, a strict thirty-day clock and a weak online service record.

What we'd buy

The Perfect Vintage Wide-Leg Jean $148
The brand's best-selling denim family, cut wide but not sloppy, in Cone denim.
Madewell describes a high, fitted waist and a leg that widens gradually, and owners keep repeating that it is "not crazy wide". The comfort-stretch version blends cotton with lyocell and polyester for give on day one. The catch is consistency: one long-time buyer on a different wash said three new pairs came up tighter and thinner than her old ones, and another found the same size ran small. Try two sizes and keep the receipt, because sale washes are often final sale.
- Best for
- Women who want one wide-leg jean that dresses up
- Weak spot
- Sizing shifts between washes and production runs

The 1991 Straight-Leg Jean $148
The men's pick: relaxed through the thigh with a plain straight leg.
This is Madewell's '90s-inspired men's cut, in a 12.25-ounce denim that is 98 percent cotton with a little elastane, so it looks rigid but bends. The product page lists an eleven-and-a-half-inch rise on a size 32, which suits men who find slim jeans pinch at the thigh. Every review we could read on the dark wash was five stars, but there are only a handful on that colorway, so treat the praise as early. It is sold in select stores, which makes trying it on harder.
- Best for
- Men with athletic thighs who dislike skinny jeans
- Weak spot
- Thin review history on individual washes

The Greta Ballet Flat $128
A leather flat with real padding, part of the best-selling Greta line.
The square-toe Greta is leather inside and out, with a bow at the vamp and what Madewell calls Cloudlift padding. Reviewers who stand at work say it lasts a full shift without heel rub, which is rare for a ballet flat. Sizing is the trap. The product page says it runs large and to go down a half size, yet several owners had to go up a half size instead. If there is a store nearby, try it on before ordering online.
- Best for
- All-day office or retail shifts
- Weak spot
- Sizing advice and owner experience disagree

The Ellis Shopper Tote $218
A structured suede work tote with a flat base that holds a laptop upright.
The Ellis is suede with leather trim, a cotton lining, a magnetic closure and an eleven-and-a-half-inch handle drop, roomy enough for a laptop and gym clothes. Its early reviews are glowing, mostly about the sturdy flat bottom and a leather smell rather than a chemical one. That record is short, though, and suede scuffs and stains far more easily than smooth leather. There is a smaller version at $148 if you do not carry a computer.
- Best for
- Commuters who carry a laptop daily
- Weak spot
- Suede marks easily; limited track record so far

The Perfect Crewneck Tee in Allday Jersey $45
The most-reviewed basic on the site, and most owners buy it again in more colors.
It is 100 percent cotton, regular fit, about twenty-four inches long from the shoulder. Hundreds of reviews average above four and a half stars, and repeat buyers own it in several colors. The one-star reviews cluster tightly: necklines that pucker or wrinkle after the first wash, colors that fade, and a body that tall women find short. One reviewer pointed out the women's tee costs more than the men's. Wash it cold and lay it flat, and it is a solid basic at a stiff price.
- Best for
- Layering under jackets and cardigans
- Weak spot
- Neckline can pucker after washing

The Calli Knee-High Boot
At $298 this is the priciest shoe in the current lineup, and its early reviews are mixed. The zip only runs part way up, which several owners said leaves no room for muscular calves, and one tall-boot shopper found the shaft rose above her knee. If it fits your legs it is comfortable, but you are paying top dollar for a narrow, unforgiving pattern.
Madewell x NYPL Relaxed Tee in Vintage Jersey
The library collaboration is charming, but the graphic tee lists at $78, well above the $45 Perfect Tee, for what is still a cotton T-shirt with a print. We found no owner reviews yet to judge how the print holds up in the wash. Buy it as a gift for a book lover if you like; as a wardrobe basic it is poor value.
How Madewell stacks up
Two brands a shopper is likely to be weighing at the same time. Words only; the numbers change too often to print.
| Row | Madewell | Levi's | Everlane |
|---|---|---|---|
| Range | Women's and men's denim, knits, shoes, leather bags, plus outside labels on its Marketplace | Denim first, with jackets, tops and workwear across dozens of fits | Pared-back basics, denim, knitwear and shoes with a short, steady range |
| Price position | Premium mall pricing, with most jeans at one fixed price and frequent sale events | Wide spread from budget core fits to premium vintage reissues | Mid-priced basics that undercut Madewell on tees and knits |
| Returns | Thirty days from purchase, paid mail label for most shoppers, free in store | Mail and in-store returns, on terms set out in its own help pages | Thirty-day window for unworn items, with a fee on mail returns |

What people ask about Madewell
Does Madewell charge for returns?
By mail, usually yes. The prepaid label costs $7.50 for any number of items and is taken out of your refund, unless you are an Icon member. You can also post it back yourself with a tracked service. Returning to a Madewell store is free and refunds instantly, even for online orders.
What is the Madewell denim trade-up program?
Bring jeans from any brand to a Madewell store and you get $25 off a new full-price pair of Madewell jeans for each pair you hand in, with no limit, though only one discount can apply per purchase. Wearable pairs are resold through Madewell Forever, run with thredUp, and the rest are recycled into insulation.
Does Madewell offer price adjustments?
Once, on full-price merchandise, within seven days of purchase or of the online ship date, and you need the original receipt. Anything bought on sale, or with a coupon or promotion, is not eligible.
Were any Madewell products recalled recently?
Yes. In July 2026 Madewell and the Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled two Holiday 2024 sweaters, the Women's Double V-Neck Sweater and V-Neck Cardigan, over flammability standards. Check the tag for style NT611 or NT612 and season HO24; the recall page explains how to claim a refund or store credit.
Do Madewell jeans run true to size?
Opinions split by fit and wash. Plenty of owners call the Perfect Vintage line true to size, while others say it runs small and some regular customers size down in Madewell compared with other brands. The site sells petite, short, tall and curvy versions of many fits, so check those before giving up on a style.
The bottom line
Madewell still makes jeans that a lot of people love, and the flat $148 price, petite and tall lengths, free hemming and denim trade-up make the denim easy to recommend if you shop in person. Online is a weaker experience: returns cost money unless you spend heavily, the clock starts at purchase, and Trustpilot complaints about wrong items and slow refunds are hard to ignore. Join Insider, buy jeans in a store, and be choosy elsewhere.
