Nanit Review: A Smart Camera With a Subscription Habit

Nanit’s overhead camera reads breathing motion from a patterned cotton band and turns nights into sleep charts. The hardware is clever; the subscription nudges and the return fee are less charming.

The verdict in 60 seconds

  • The overhead camera plus a cotton Breathing Band tracks breathing motion with no sensor on the baby, which is the smartest idea in this category.
  • Live video, alerts, breathing motion, and two-way audio work without a plan, but saved video history starts at $120 a year.
  • Returns are accepted for 30 days from delivery with a prepaid label, yet Nanit deducts a $15 restocking fee from any order containing a camera or stand.
  • Nanit’s own warranty says its products are not medical devices and are neither regulated nor approved by the FDA.
  • Recent App Store reviews split between parents who love the sleep data and parents fed up with disconnects and subscription pop-ups.

The picks

Pick 01

Smart Baby Monitor System $289.99

The overhead camera, and the only setup that unlocks sleep tracking.

Choose a floor stand or wall mount; both cost the same, and either one gives the top-down crib view that Nanit’s sleep analysis needs. Without a plan you still get live video from anywhere, sound and motion alerts, temperature and humidity, two-way audio, white noise, and up to two users. Video is encrypted with 256-bit AES. The main app averages 4.7 stars on the App Store, but a steady stream of App Store complaints describes buffering, logouts, and cameras dropping off Wi-Fi.

Best for
Parents who want sleep data alongside video
Weak spot
Insights and video history need a paid plan

Pick 02

Breathing Band from $19.99

A plain cotton band that lets the camera watch breathing motion without electronics.

There is nothing to charge and nothing electronic against the baby’s skin; the camera reads the printed pattern as the chest rises and falls, and alerts you if it stops seeing motion. Sizes run from small, for 6 to 12.5 lbs, to large, for up to 30 lbs, and it also sells as a three-pack. It only works when the band is visible to the camera, and Nanit is clear that none of this is a medical device. It is the cheapest upgrade in the store.

Nanit owners who want breathing motion alerts
Weak spot
Needs a clear camera view to work

Pick 03

Smart Baby Monitor + Flex Stand $249

The same camera on a portable stand, for travel or a second room.

The Flex Stand gives a 130-degree angled view rather than an overhead one, and Nanit says the camera remembers up to ten Wi-Fi networks. Breathing motion monitoring still works on it, but sleep tracking does not, so think of this as a travel or playroom camera. One App Store reviewer called setting it up on a new network a half-hour job, and another said it never pairs in hotel rooms. Pack patience along with the stand.

Best for
Grandparents’ houses, travel, and playrooms
Weak spot
No sleep tracking from this angle

Pick 04

Sound + Light Machine $99.99

Sound, nightlight, and live audio monitoring in one bedside unit.

It pairs soothing sounds and adjustable light with live audio monitoring, so it can double as a basic listening monitor. It runs through its own companion app, which sits at a 4.2 average on the App Store, noticeably below the main Nanit app. Note the fine print: it is excluded from HSA and FSA purchases, unlike the camera. If you already have a sound machine you like, there is little reason to switch.

Best for
Building a consistent bedtime routine
Weak spot
Separate app, and not HSA or FSA eligible

Pick 05

Breathing Wear Sleeping Bag $34.99

A wearable blanket printed with the breathing pattern, for older babies.

Once a baby is past swaddling, this sleeping bag carries the same printed pattern as the Breathing Band, so breathing motion tracking keeps working without a band on top. It has a two-way zipper for diaper changes and comes in sizes from 3 to 6 months up to 12 to 18 months. The weak spot is that you need a new one each time your baby moves up a size, and it only earns its price if you own the camera.

Best for
Older babies who have outgrown the swaddle
Weak spot
Each size is a separate purchase

Milestones Insights Plan

At $300 a year, Milestones buys seven days of continuous video history, 30 days of sound and motion events, unlimited caregivers, and unlimited sleep analysis. That is more than the camera costs, every year. The $120 Memories plan covers what most parents use, and the free tier handles live viewing and breathing motion alerts. Even the membership FAQ still mentions older plan names, which does not inspire confidence.

Home 8" Display

A $179 touchscreen to view a camera you can already watch on your phone, tablet, or Mac is a hard sell. The listing says it is excluded from sitewide discounts and promotions, and Nanit also excludes it from HSA and FSA purchases. A recent App Store reviewer complained that a new update put subscription ads on the monitor screen itself.

Is Nanit for you?

Buy if you are

  • a data-minded parent who wants sleep charts and breathing motion alerts in one app
  • able to mount a camera above the crib, which the analytics require
  • fine paying for a plan if you want saved video history

Pass if you are

  • opposed to subscriptions or in-app upsell prompts on a product you already bought
  • a frequent traveler, given repeated reports of painful setup on new networks
  • expecting medical-grade monitoring, which Nanit explicitly says it does not provide

Reader questions

Is Nanit a medical device?

No. Nanit’s limited warranty states that its products are not medical devices, are neither regulated nor approved by the FDA, and are not designed to detect, diagnose, prevent, treat, or cure any condition. Breathing motion alerts are a convenience feature, not a substitute for supervision. This is not medical advice; talk to your pediatrician about safe sleep and any health concerns.

Does Nanit require a subscription?

Not for core features. Live video, sound and motion alerts, breathing motion monitoring, temperature and humidity, two-way audio, and two users work without a plan. Memories is $120 a year, pitched as $10 a month, and adds two days of video history; Milestones is $300 a year with seven days. All plans are billed annually.

Do I need the floor stand or wall mount?

For sleep tracking, yes. Nanit says sleep analysis, milestone detection, and time-lapse videos need the overhead view from the Floor Stand or Wall Mount. The Flex Stand keeps breathing motion monitoring but gives an angled 130-degree view and loses sleep tracking.

Where we land

Nanit got the hard part right: a camera that watches breathing motion through a cotton band, with no sensor on the baby. Then it built a business around the parts that should be simple. Saved video costs money every year, the app nags about it, returns carry a restocking fee, and human support works weekday afternoons only. Buy the camera and a Breathing Band, skip the add-ons, and test your Wi-Fi early.
