PUMA Review: Speedcat Hype, Running Shoes and Fine Print in 2026

PUMA's retro sneakers are back in fashion and its NITRO running shoes are getting serious, so we read the US store's policies and owner reviews to see what is worth buying direct.

Verdict, fast

  • The Speedcat OG and Suede Classic are the lifestyle picks, both rated well above four stars by owners on the US store.
  • The Deviate NITRO 3 is a carbon-plated trainer that gets a thirty-day test run, so you can actually run in it before deciding.
  • Returns are free and allowed for thirty days from delivery, but some collaborations get only fifteen days and final-sale items none.
  • Shipping is free from $75, or $50 for members; there are no direct exchanges, so a new size means a new order.
  • Trustpilot sits at a bad 1.6 out of 5, driven by lost parcels, slow refunds and missing return credits.

Worth your money

Pick 01

Speedcat OG Sneakers $100

The low-profile motorsport sneaker that brought PUMA back into fashion.

PUMA says the Speedcat began as a fireproof Formula 1 shoe more than twenty-five years ago; this reissue pairs a leather upper with a suede Formstrip and a thin rubber sole. It averages 4.4 out of 5 from more than a hundred ratings. Most of the one- and two-star reviews are not about the shoe at all: they are about sellouts, slow restocks and resellers buying in bulk. The fit runs small for some, and one buyer noted sizes stop at 14. Expect little cushioning; this is a style shoe.

Best for
Slim, retro everyday sneakers
Weak spot
Thin sole; popular colors sell out

Pick 02

Suede Classic Sneakers $90

The 1968 original, in more colors than almost any sneaker on the site.

The Suede Classic is a simple cupsole sneaker with a rubber sole, now with a leather upper and suede overlays on the heel and tongue according to the current listing. It averages 4.6 out of 5 from about seventy ratings, and owners mostly talk about color, from orange to lavender, and a roomy toe box. Every review we could read was positive, which is a small and dated sample. PUMA's own care guide says never machine-wash shoes, so treat suede gently.

Best for
Casual wear and color fans
Weak spot
Suede marks easily; flat, basic cushioning

Pick 03

Deviate NITRO 3 $160

A carbon-plated daily trainer that comes with a thirty-day test run.

The Deviate NITRO 3 pairs nitrogen-infused NITROFOAM with a carbon PWRPLATE and PUMAGRIP rubber, aimed at neutral runners who want one shoe for tempo days and long runs. Owners average 4.5 out of 5 and several compare it favorably with Saucony and Asics trainers. The complaints are consistent: narrow, firm for a super trainer, and tiring for one buyer on easy runs. The page offers PUMA's thirty-day test run, which lets you return it after running in it.

Best for
Tempo runs and race-day training
Weak spot
Narrow fit and a firm ride

Pick 04

Velocity NITRO 5 $140

PUMA's cushioned everyday road shoe, now in its fifth version.

The Velocity NITRO 5 uses NITROFOAM cushioning, an engineered mesh upper with at least 30 percent recycled material, and a PUMAGRIP outsole. PUMA lists an average life of about 800 kilometers, roughly 500 miles, which is in line with mainstream trainers. It has almost no owner reviews yet, so you are buying on the strength of the earlier versions. A wide version and a Gore-Tex version are also listed. This model is marked as excluded from discounts.

Best for
Daily miles for neutral runners
Weak spot
Too new for a real review record

Pick 05

Palermo Sneakers $85

An early-'80s terrace shoe with a T-toe and gum sole, cheaper than the Speedcat.

The Palermo pairs a suede base with a leather Formstrip and the classic gum rubber sole. Owners average about 4.3 out of 5. Several love the color options and say it breaks in after a few hours, but one reviewer called it stiff, cardboard-like and lacking arch support, and another received a size 8 in a box labeled 6, then waited weeks for a replacement. Buy it for the look, and add an insole if you walk a lot.

Best for
Terrace-style casual outfits
Weak spot
Stiff and unsupportive for long walks

Softride Enzo 5

The Softride Enzo 5 is pitched as an all-day comfort shoe with soft EVA cushioning and a TPU cage, and it is often on sale. But it averages only 3.8 out of 5 from the US store's ratings, the weakest of any shoe we checked here. For comfort, the Velocity NITRO 5 is a proper running shoe, and the Suede Classic is the better casual buy.

Questions readers ask

Does PUMA offer free returns in the US?

Yes, for orders placed on the US PUMA site, within thirty days of delivery, using a FedEx drop-off. Orders to APO/FPO addresses and US territories do not get free returns. Final-sale items cannot be returned, and some collaborations only allow fifteen days, so check the product page.

Can I exchange PUMA shoes for a different size?

Not directly. PUMA asks you to return the pair and place a new order; the return label is prepaid and the new order ships free on standard delivery. During sellouts that means you may lose your size, so order the new pair before sending the old one back.

What is the PUMA 30 Day Test Run?

It applies to selected top-end running shoes. Your thirty days start when the shoes arrive, and you can run, walk or train in them, then send them back if they do not work out. The Deviate NITRO 3 page carried the offer when we checked; not every running shoe does.

Do PUMA Speedcats run small?

Some owners say so, and one reviewer complained that sizes stop at 14. The upper is leather with a narrow motorsport shape, so if you have a wide foot or sit between sizes, consider going half a size up.

The bottom line

PUMA is a good place to buy the shoes everyone wants right now, like the Speedcat and Suede, and its NITRO runners are worth a look, especially with a thirty-day test run on the plated Deviate. The store itself is the weak link: a thirty-day window, no direct exchanges, thin and dated on-site reviews, and a Trustpilot record full of lost parcels and slow refunds. Join the free membership, buy the classics, and keep your tracking numbers.
